the comment catches her off guard. not because she takes it personally, but the word overindulgence causes her spine to stiffen. it's absurdly silly, to take offense at such an offhanded insult, but her feelings sting at the remark.
overindulgence. as if she's indulged in anything since coming here. she can't remember the last time she had chocolate. or anything sweet, really, unable to afford it, and it wasn't as if heleen went out of her way to treat her. some girls earned pleasantries, but not inej, who was frequently a problem and was subject to beatings more than anything else.
so as she watches the waffle maker about to decorate her own waffle, she clears her throat, and gestures with a flick of her fingers that it's not needed. she could just have it with syrup. the waffle maker seems to understand what she means without saying anything, and shrugs, serving the food as is.
it's stupid and childish to feel self-conscious over a treat, but now she no longer wants to eat it. ]
