I know. [ He replies softly, a small smile tucked in the corner of his mouth. In the first few months when Inej had joined the Dregs, she'd distastefully sipped the coffee like the rest of them. Eventually, she'd graduated to drinking the (watered down) black tea that upper class Kerch women preferred to serve in their parlors. As she'd learned more of the city, Kaz remembers finding a tin of her favorite mix, tucked towards the back of a cabinet in the Slat's kitchen. The dented tin didn't have a label on it, but he'd just known it was hers.

Two days later, they'd gone on a cramped lookout, their skinny bodies very nearly pressed together. He'd caught the scent of sugary mint on her breath, with a floral note as it dissipated, confirming his guess. ]

He always had his hands full, really. Long days, taking care of all this. Neither of us were much help until Jordie turned ten. [ Kaz had still been too young, too small to do any of the actual labor. He lets that wash over him, giving Inej's hand a little squeeze in return. ]

No, food crops require too much attention. [ One tiny bit of blight and the whole thing could go. ] Da only hired on help during the harvest: late spring and again in the fall. We, uh, grew flowers.
