[ it had taken some doing, convincing kaz to come with her on a trip. the dregs would be fine left to their own devices, and honestly, inej was impressed with herself that she had managed it with minimal squabbling. but after some weeks of preparation, they found themselves just off the coast of novyi zem, sailing through calm seas, tucked away in the captain's quarters.
she relished nights like this, with just them. without the need to hide behind reputation or fear, comfortable in each other's arms. inej is half undressed, in a loose shirt that she had fished out of kaz's packed clothes. she had wasted little time in falling into her (their) bed, quick to be rid of the knives and boots and braided hair in lieu of being comfortable and undone. something her beloved other half is still working on, as she's watching him get dressed for bed -- or, rather, undressed, a lazy grin soon appearing on her features. ]
Ridiculous man.

[ seto honestly cannot remember the last time yuugi was this furious with him.
something had happened, in returning from the afterlife. something had cracked. he wasn't entirely sure whether or not it was a flaw in seto's technology, or some other otherworldly force that had wreaked havoc. it had resulted in a deafening boom, and a brilliant white light. and seto had wound up in a heap on the floor of his laboratory, with an unconscious atem not five feet away.
it truly hadn't been his intention, to bring him back. not totally. he had been desperate for some semblance of closure, an opportunity to talk. something to stem the overwhelming grief and wave of depression that had been so hard to shake, following the ceremonial duel. he knew, in the end, that atem needed to be put to rest. and he knew that his want for closure was selfish, in the face of sealing the darkness. but it didn't stop him from wanting it. or missing the ability to see atem again, even if it was only for half a moment.
at any rate, it went wrong. what else was new. and after ensuring atem was not dead, seto had managed to put him in a car, and he had sat there in the parking garage of kaiba corporation, with his head resting on the steering wheel, trying to figure out what to do.
he had ultimately decided that the only person who would know what to do would be mutou yuugi.
so, seto had driven atem (who, worringly, was still unconscious, but breathing, at least) to the game shop. had knocked on the door to reveal a half-asleep mutou yuugi, who looked startled at seeing seto so soon after the disaster that had been their duel. and upon revealing why he was there, it had promptly devolved into a spat. or, well, a one-sided spat. seto, for once, had remained mostly silent. there was nothing to say, really -- he had figured out how to enter the afterlife, and he had no idea how atem had returned. the only thing seto knew for certain was that he hadn't intended to bring atem back. and once he was sure atem was in safe hands and still breathing (and, indeed, coming to), he had decided to go home.
cowardly, probably. but in two days, seto had managed to send a text to yuugi, the anxiety crawling into his throat by the minute without knowing for sure. he had dismantled every piece of tech that had created the mess they were in. he had run tests, diagnostics, and rebuilt it from scratch. nothing explained why atem was here. nothing explained what happened. so, all seto was left with was the fact that atem was here, and he needed to know if he was fine. ]
Is he alive?
[ to which yuugi responded: ]
Sleeping half of the day.
But alive.
Are you going to explain how he's here?
[ seto, incidentally, did not. mostly because he had no idea.
but he only lasted a handful more days, long enough where he was certain he had to have recovered enough to see someone, before heading toward the game shop. begrudgingly, teeth gritted, weight heavy in his chest as he turned his phone over in his hands. this was pathetic. there was absolutely no need to hesitate or avoid the consequences of whatever had happened. but for some reason, speaking to him felt like the hardest thing in the world to do.
finally, though, seto rested his back against the front window of the closed game shop, exhaling slowly before sending a text to yuugi: ]
